It was an honour to co-host the Burwood Local Business Forum as the Minister for Small and Family Business, the Workplace and Deregulation, alongside the Australia Chinese Youth Business Association. The event was a huge success, with over 30 local business attendees at Burwood library.

It is small and family businesses like those in my own electorate that contribute hugely to Australia’s economic development. It was good to see how the work of the Australia Chinese Youth Business Association enables stronger bonds and closer partnership among Burwood local merchants.

The new facilities were furnished with training equipment funded by Round 3 of the Stronger Communities Program, showing how important this grant program is in supporting the efforts of our local community organisations.

While building and construction, hospitality, health and education all account for a big slab of that employment, there’s a growing band of entrepreneurs building new high-tech concepts including virtual reality, digital mapping, 3D cameras, wearable technology and software.

The Turnbull Government this week announced a grant of $500,000 to the University of Western Sydney to support its Launch Pad incubator program which is growing 30 digital technology start-ups on campuses in Werrington, Parramatta and Liverpool.

It was excellent visiting and meeting with start-up developers at the Werrington campus and see in action how the incubator program provides important support to budding entrepreneurs.

The incubator helps them take an idea or concept through to the stage where it was a viable business creating jobs of the future. The UWS Launch Pads really are Western Sydney’s answer to Silicon Valley, with an amazing range of high tech businesses coming through over the past four years.

LaunchPad event at Werrington Park – Minister The Hon Craig Laundy MP – Minister for Small and Family business

The Turnbull government is proud to support the program so it can continue to provide access to mentors, entrepreneur training, professional services, collaborative workspaces, tech support and an expansive university and partner network to help get business ideas off the ground and into international markets.

It will be Game On Down Under when Australia welcomes competitors and their family and friends for Invictus Games Sydney 2018 to be held from 20-27 October.

The Invictus Games is an international sporting event for wounded, injured and ill service men and women, both active duty and veteran.

Sydney will host more than 500 competitors and around 1000 family and friends for the eight-day event being held from 20-27 October 2018. The Games will feature competition in eleven sports with events being held across Greater Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park and on and around Sydney Harbour.

The Games highlight the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding of those who serve their country. The Games also celebrate the crucial role played by family and friends in the recovery process.

As we race towards the opening ceremony, we’re encouraging you to ‘Make Your Mark Down Under’. There is a role for everyone in Invictus Games Sydney 2018 and ‘Make Your Mark Down Under’ enables you to get involved and show your support for our wounded warriors, no matter where you are or what you do.

A fantastic way to ‘Make Your Mark’ is to attend the Games in October and cheer on our competitors loudly and proudly from the stands.

Tickets are on sale now at https://www.invictusgames2018.org/. Don’t miss your chance to celebrate the healing power of sport and cheer on our wounded warriors over 8 days of fierce competition. Be inspired. Be entertained. Be there.

Throughout April, my team and I decided to run a photography competition. Constituents could send in their photos of Reid for a chance to win a $200 photography supplies voucher and have their photograph displayed in Parliament House.

We are excited to say that the winner is Dr Desmond Chu, a local amateur photographer who captured a cracker of a shot at the SS Ayrfield at Homebush Bay. You can view Desmond’s fantastic photos here.

We had over fifty entries showing unique and creative shots of your favourite spots in Reid. Thank you to everyone who entered. Here are a few of my favourites below.

On Saturday 07 April 2018, the Abbotsford Juniors Football Club welcomed a new amenities building to Campbell Park, Chiswick.

Minister Laundy, who was present at the building’s opening, had secured $1 million of funding for Abbotsford in 2016 to ensure that the development of Campbell Park was a success.

The president of the Abbotsford Juniors Football Club Gilbert Lorquet is grateful to have attained this Federal funding for his Club and community. “Today the world class quality and standard of our clubhouse finally matches our ambitions and need of the community,” Lorquet said, before the building was officially launched.

The Abbotsford Juniors Football Club has broken new ground in the last few years. In 2018, the club has registered 1,072 players across 82 teams, and are now the largest Club in the City of Canada Bay and the 4th largest club in the Canterbury District. They have also seen Women’s Football grow in the last 5 years, with 4 Women’s teams and 15 Girls teams this season. Last season they made history with the first ever win in Football NSW’s Champion of Champions, with their Under 18s becoming the best in the State. These achievements reflect Reid’s outstanding sporting accomplishments, and the new facilities will only further support the community in their successes.

Minister Laundy and his team had the pleasure of visiting the Embroiderers Guild New South Wales, a not-for-profit membership body for anyone and everyone who loves to stitch or would love to learn. President Wendy Schmid gave a tour of the recently refurbished building, which now contains a Collection Room, an extensive specialised Library and Exhibition Gallery.

Minister Laundy was instrumental in helping the Guild acquire a grant to assist with the rebuilding of the centre.

“After years of hard work by so many it has been a privilege to be involved in some small way to help these visionaries achieve their dream,” he said. “My great hope is that these new premises breathe new life into an ancient art and craft.”

The organisation has received a number of state and federal grants in order to sustain its work among the community of Reid, which includes workshops, courses and inclusive community activities.
