I feel like I travelled the globe this past weekend, but the truth is that I experienced so many different and engaging cultures without even leaving my local area! The varied events throughout the weekend demonstrate, emphatically, the freedom Australians of all backgrounds enjoy in coming together to celebrate their cultural heritage. I am proud that in this country we respect and embrace the rights of all Australians to celebrate, practise and maintain their cultural traditions within the law and free from discrimination.
Yesterday the Tamil Study Centre Homebush hosted the 29th Annual Kalai Vizha celebrations. I am immensely proud of the Tamil Study Centre’s important work, since 1987, in teaching Tamil language, arts and culture to students from pre-school age to Year 12, and helping to ensure Tamil culture continues to be lived and celebrated.
Congratulations to the Tamil Study Centre and everyone else who celebrated cultural events and milestones this past weekend.
