Our family floral business has been run by three generations of our family and there is one issue that has been on my mind for some time. We employed several backpackers some time ago to work on my farm and I was surprised to find out that we had to pay them superannuation. The superannuation scheme was introduced the ease the Government’s burden of supporting Australia’s ageing population. Whilst I agree that the scheme is a good idea, the fact remains that it is a burden that employers have to accept, so it is a bit puzzling when we have to subsidise workers who are not Australian residents. Given backpacker’s limited experience in our industry, it can take up to four weeks to properly train them, only to see them move on a short time later, so they definitely do not represent value to the employer. I believe the government should be looking to review this and ease the pressure on employers that hire backpackers.
